It is difficult to give a solid answer to the question "what does it mean to be an artist in the age of AI". During such a tumultuous time, where things are changing so quickly, it is difficult to discern the role of anything, especially of an artist. many believe that the artist is a doomed role to have, as it will quickly be replaced by new technology. While this is a sad possibility, I have come to a realization during this course that AI will never be able to replace a human's passion. I believe that passion is an integral trait that every artist should have. People should care about what they are creating, and believe it is meaningful and important. I believe this is what it means to be an artist in the age of AI. To create with passion is to reject the growing domination of generative AI. Generative AI can not replicate the love, care, and uniquity of new artworks being made by a passionate artist.
While I do believe that generative AI should be rejected to some extent, I also have learned over this course that it is possible to work in collaboration with AI, (something that I previously thought of as morally wrong, and anti-artist). I am still learning, and understanding how collaboration with AI works, but my previous understanding that AI could only be used to create finished artworks has been proven false. I've been shown that AI can function simply as a tool, rather than an actual artist. I believe that this is how artists should interact with AI and new technology. Not as a new medium, but as a new tool to help them create their own works. I think this also minimizes the danger of the growing threat of generative AI. I believe that to minimize the dangers, or potential failures of AI, this is the best method, as it allows artists to maintain their creative voice, and continue to make human art work while simply using AI as a tool to help them. Personally, I think it's quite difficult to expand our creativity specifically through these new systems, however I think the use of these new systems allows artists to come up with new possibilities for artworks in using AI. What I mean, is that AI does not necessarily make someone more creative, however it opens new paths for people to explore, and utilize their creativity. All of these things are what I believe to be the different factors of what it means to be an artist in the age of AI.
